Default Picture on vase in Greek archeology museum

Sorry if has already been discussed, I am new to the Forum and to Greece. I saw this on a vase yesterday. It looks like a raptor with jesses on. It is located between the legs of two men in armor fighting so was likely intended to be a important part of the image. The caption says the vase is from 500 BC. The other side of the vase has a number of men with clubs walking together. Does anyone know what the picture symbolizes?
